White Wedding Dress history
With so many of our clients this time of year coming in for wedding night gifts to their brand new husbands. We bump into some interesting wedding stuff.
For those curious, it originated back in 1840! Yes Queen Victoria began the custom of wearing a white wedding gown. At the time the color of the day was mostly gray, a product of the puritans.
Other colors like purple, blue and pink were also reasonably common. Princess Victoria was a rather plain looking woman, the bold opulent white dress, created a fairytale expression that the people found endearing and embraced. The plain girl marrying her prince charming set the stage for “fairytale” weddings to become popular.
Queen Victoria also started the practices of having the bridesmaids in matching dresses. She was the originator of the “something old, something new, something borrowed something blue” custom too. For a plain girl she was quite the trendsetter.
